There’s something quietly magnetic about Harmony Beach, tucked along the eastern shores of Lake Superior in the Goulais River area. Unlike busier provincial parks or crowded tourist spots, this stretch of sand feels like a secret the lake itself is keeping—a long ribbon of shoreline where forest meets water and the horizon stretches endlessly.
Getting There
Heading north from Sault Ste. Marie along Highway 17, the drive feels like shedding the city behind. After about 43 kilometers, you turn onto Harmony Beach Road. The forest thins, the lake appears, and soon you reach the shoreline: the beach stretches for roughly 3.2 kilometers, a mix of soft sand and pebbled edges, backed by gently rising forested hills.

Parking is simple, and while the former Harmony Beach Lakeview Resort no longer operates as a full-service resort, it still offers seasonal trailer sites and overnight tent & trailer camping—perfect if you want to spend a night under the stars beside the lake. For supplies, there’s a small local shop called Campers Corner Store on Yourchuck Drive, a short drive away, ideal for snacks, drinks, or last-minute gear before hitting the beach.

The Beach Experience
Kick off your shoes and wander along the waterline. The sand is soft in stretches, rougher in others where pebbles and driftwood dot the shore. Lake Superior isn’t tropical, but there’s an authenticity here: the waves, the wind, the distant call of birds. Fewer people visit Harmony Beach, making it easy to wander, explore, and simply breathe.
A highlight for boating enthusiasts is the on-site boat launch, offering direct lake access for small boats, kayaks, or fishing trips. In winter, the beach transforms into a popular ice fishing access point, with anglers taking advantage of open lake areas and easy parking.

The lake itself is immense. Every glance toward the horizon reminds you how vast Superior is. Sunsets are spectacular, painting the water in peach, gold, and fiery red.

Evenings in all seasons can reveal a different magic: this beach is a prime spot for viewing the northern lights. Even a faint aurora reflects beautifully on the lake, framed by the dark forested shoreline.

One important note for visitors: there are no washroom or change room facilities nearby, so plan ahead. Bring towels, a change of clothes, and anything else you might need for a comfortable visit.
Practical Tips
- Swimming: The water is beautiful but cold. Algoma Public Health occasionally issues swimming advisories, so check ahead if you plan to enter the lake.
- Camping: Seasonal trailer sites and overnight tent & trailer sites are available at the resort. This is a great way to experience sunrise and sunset over Lake Superior without leaving the beach.
- Facilities: None on-site beyond the campground. Pack everything you need.
- Supplies: Campers Corner Store on Yourchuck Drive is the closest spot for snacks, drinks, or last-minute gear.
- Best Time to Visit: Late summer for warmer days, or early autumn for solitude and stunning light. Sunset and early morning offer the most breathtaking views.
- What to Pack: Beach towel or mat, windbreaker, water shoes for pebbly spots, snacks, and camera. A small chair or blanket is useful if you plan to linger.
Why Harmony Beach Stays With You
